Above: World detail
Top row: birdsfoot violet, closed gentian, wild geranium, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, large-flowered trillium, Dutchman's britches, mountain laurel, photograph of laurel blossoms. ~ Second row: Indigo bunting, cardinalCarolina chicadee, goldfinch, redwing blackbird, purple coneflower (Echinacea), Indian pipe, flame azalea, and Mouse Creek Falls: left - photo by Julie Jones; right - my photo, April 12, 2014. I finally got to hike to the falls in 2014.
The quilt top was completed April 16, 2005. Size: 60" wide by 50" high, with hand and machine piecing, hand quilting, hand appliqué, and hand embroidery. Wildflower embroideries in the top row were adapted from the black and white line drawings in "Wildflowers of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park" published by the Park Service Wives Organization, ©1971. Redwing blackbirds and cattails block was adapted from a pattern in Wild Birds by Carol Armstrong (CT Publishing, 2000). Other blocks and birds are original designs. The waterfall is Mouse Creek Falls, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, adapted from a photo by Julie Jones of Asheville, NC.
So far I've completed quilting the beach, earth, the wildflowers, and the bees, but quilting is proceeding quite slowly (over years!). Although I retired from my full-time job in June 2011, I do contract work, including the web sites for WNC Quilters Guild, Frosty Mountain Christmas Trees, Madison County, NC, as well as projects for other companies. I also do the website for my church (volunteer). I had cataract surgery in Oct. 2014, and I am able to see the colors & stitches much better now. One of these days.....
